On Friday 4 December, Theatre by the Lake will donate the Box Office receipts from the 7pm performance of their Christmas show Grimm Tales to the Cumbria Flood Recovery Fund. This will go to help the people whose homes or businesses have been devastated during the current unprecedented weather.
The exact amount will depend on the number of people who support this evening, but if the performance is a sell-out the appeal could benefit by over £5000.
“The people of Cumbria have given Theatre by the Lake outstanding support during its first ten years,’’ said Patric Gilchrist, the theatre’s Executive Director. “This is an opportunity to show our appreciation and to support those who have suffered from the disaster. We hope that the audience who come to the performance on 4 December will both enjoy the show and welcome the chance to contribute to this very important cause.”
“I am delighted that Theatre by the Lake can help in such a practical way,’’ said Ian Forrest, the theatre’s Artistic Director.
The appeal was launched jointly by Cumbria Community Foundation and Workington MP Tony Cunningham and will focus on providing money for those experiencing financial hardship as a result of the floods.
Nine members of Theatre by the Lake staff living in the Keswick and Cockermouth areas have themselves suffered in the floods and many others have faced long detours to get to work. The truck from York bringing the scenery for Grimm Tales only just managed to reach the theatre.
“We were greatly relieved,’’ said Patric Gilchrist. “If the lorry had not made it, we might well have had to postpone the opening of the show. Thankfully it will open as planned on Saturday 28 November.”
Grimm Tales, by Carol Ann Duffy, is adapted from well-known folktales by the Brothers Grimm andruns from Saturday 28 November to Saturday 9 January.
